| 1) Measure overall opening from floor to beam or soffit (must have structural pressure-treated post or lally column for load support). | 2) If needed, install blocking around load bearing post, top, bottom and center (use pressure treated lumber). Thickness of blocking plus post must be the same width as the inside of the column. | 3) Blocking must not be so wide that it contacts the angled sides of the column. 2½" wide should suffice for 8" columns, and 3¼" for the 10" size. | ||

| 4) Trim shaft pieces at least ¼" shorter than opening height (from step 1). | 5) Apply adhesive to inside joints, and one outside edge. | 6) Stand up column and wrap around load support. Nail (or tape) open edge to finish seam. (Tape can be removed after glue cures.) | ||

| 7) Apply adhesive to inside joints and one outside edge of base. | 8) Wrap base around column and nail (or tape) edge. Pin nail base to column shaft as well. | 9) Apply adhesive to inside joints and one outside edge of cap. | ||

| 10) Wrap cap around column and nail (or tape) edge. Pin-nail cap to column shaft as well. | 11) Caulk nail holes and edges of cap and base where they meet the shaft. | 12) Clean surface of column with cleaner recommeded by the paint manufacturer. Paint with two coats of acrylic latex paint. | ||
